Kids-first, by age
| Age | What to do |
|---|---|
| Under 2s | Shoot them first, expect 8 minutes max. Bring their favourite toy — hand it to the parent, not the child. |
| 3–5 years | Ask them a question mid-shot ('what did you have for lunch?'). Don't say 'smile'. |
| 6–10 years | Give them a job — 'you're in charge of making mum laugh'. Shoot the making-laugh, not the smile. |
| Teens | Talk to them like adults. One-on-one shot before the group so they feel seen. |
FAQ
How long should a family portrait session take?
45 minutes total. First 20 for group shots (while young kids still care), last 25 for individual and candid frames.
What's the best time of day for family portraits?
One hour before sunset outdoors. Indoors, north-facing window mid-morning. Avoid midday sun — squinting kids and heavy shadows.
Should everyone wear the same colour?
Coordinated palette, not matching outfits. Pick 2–3 tones (e.g. cream, sage, denim) and let everyone dress within them.
